Creation Engine¶
The Creation Engine is the proprietary game engine developed by Bethesda Game Studios. It powers The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011), its Special Edition (2016) and Anniversary Edition (2021), Fallout 4 (2015), and Fallout 76 (2018). An upgraded version, Creation Engine 2, is used for Starfield (2023). Todd Howard has confirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI will use Creation Engine 3.
The engine is based on Gamebryo (formerly NetImmerse), which Bethesda used for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Fallout 3. Many of its core file formats and architectural patterns trace back to this lineage.
Creation Engine is written in C++.
